Noise Monitoring Services was recently approached by California-based noise control company Pacific Sound Control to provide noise modeling for their ‘Noise Soaker’ acoustical barrier blankets. These composite sound barriers are designed to reduce noise from construction sites as well as many other outdoor situations. Our work involved calculating and mapping the noise reduction produced by the blankets for various scenarios.
The Noise Soaker blankets are constructed from an exterior-grade, UV resistant mass-loaded vinyl barrier layer and an exterior-grade vinyl-coated-polyester (VCP) quilted fiberglass absorber facing. The barriers have been acoustically tested and provide a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 33 and a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.75. These ratings are among the highest for all temporary acoustical barriers and show that the product is good at both blocking and absorbing sound. Our noise mapping work (see example below right) shows a large reduction in sound levels is possible, with reductions of 20 decibels achievable.
